The Horseshoe Trophy 2010

On the evening of 25th March, members of five Devon camera clubs met at Lyme Regis Golf Club to compete in the annual Horseshoe Trophy print competition. Formerly a "print and slide" battle slides have given way to more prints. The Judge was George Reekie, from Taunton, experienced and well respected. The organisation of the event rotates between the five clubs from Lyme Bay, Honiton, Chard, Exmouth and Sidmouth. The name The Horseshoe Trophy derives from the location where the event was held for many years - the "Three Horseshoes" Public House.

In recent seasons the battle has been closely fought between Exmouth Photo Group and Sidmouth Photographic Club. At half time there was a breakwhen an excellent buffet meal was enjoyed. At this point Exmouth were in the lead, three points ahead of Sidmouth. In the second half Sidmouth came up with a succession of strong prints, gradually eroding the Exmouth lead and ultimately winning by two points.

Additionally the best print of the first half, as assessed by Mr Reekie, was a superb Gannet picture by Dave McHutchison of Exmouth. The best print of the second half was a finely produced still life by Alan Slade of Sidmouth, entitled "Old friends"

Fifty prints were shown during the evening and the judge remarked that the overall standard of work had been very high. As much as anything, the event is a fine social occasion, a chance to meet up with fellow photographic enthusiasts and enjoy seeing their work. The competitive element is important, adding zest and tension to the proceedings.
