Barber Shield Slide Competition November 18 2009 Judge: Kate Platt |
|
The Barber Shield Slide Competition is held every three years. Donald Barber, a founder member of the club, presented the shield to the club on its Golden Jubilee in 1987, was born in Exeter in 1901. His first published photograph in 1917 was of a derailed train in Exeter, but many others followed and were the basis of the award of Associateship of the Royal Photographic Society in 1938. Donald was, however, a physicist by profession and he joined the staff of the Norman Lockyer Observatory in 1936. He was awarded the Fellowship of the RPS for his work in photographic physics and astronomy; from 1956 to 1961 he was superintendent of the observatory, but he remained active during his long retirement. He was awarded
an Honorary MSc by the University of Exeter in 1987 and Honorary Fellowship
of the RPS in 1988. He died in his 99th year in 2000, leaving a substantial
bequest to the photographic club. |
