Sidmouth Triumph at Horseshoe Competition

Ted Smith receiving the Horseshoe Trophy

Sidmouth won the Horseshoe competition in great style, against strong competition from Exmouth, Lyme Bay, Chard and Honiton (who hosted the gathering). We won all five of the set subject sections and one of the open subject sections; a stunning result.
Some of the entries can be seen here

John Widdows John Widdows

At our recent meeting we welcomed John Widdows who gave a presentation “In celebration of a Wonderful World” to a crowded room of club members. John is a retired marine biologist and it was not surprising that the first set of photos mostly featured landscape and close shots of seaside subjects. As we settled into this feast of images, we were not allowed to lose concentration as John changed to portrait or close ups, and also included some photos which were not successful. This was an excellent opportunity to learn more as John described what had gone wrong with the picture and then showed a successful shot of the same subject and explained what changes he had made in equipment or technique. After light refreshments, we returned to our seats for a further set of photos. This only served to confirm our positive impression of John’s skills – he is an Associate member of the Royal Photographic Society. And his variety of subject matter was an inspiration to many members to go away and try harder at their chosen subject, as there are some wonderful opportunities not far from our own front doors.!

Bandstand by Tom Reynolds came 3rd in the DPIs

Gordon Aspland judged Competition 3 on January 18th. 26 prints were entered and 54 DPIs which represents a significant shift in emphasis since the introduction of the Digital Projected Image format. It is, of course, much less work if you don't produce a print and minor blemishes will show up less.
Beryl Stanley won the prints with another charming Gambian Girl, closely followed by Tom Reynolds and, a returning member, Charlotte Sullivan. The judge possibly misunderstood the marking system, so the many who received low marks should not be too despondent.
The DPIs were headed by the same three photographers, but in a different order; Charlotte Sullivan ending up in the lead with 'Needing a Friend'

Clive Figes - Dont be Shy - Winning print - Torbay Battle

The Torbay Battle on November 30th resulted in a good win for Sidmouth against the might of Torbay, although Torbay had the winning print, courtesy of Clive Figes (above). Tony Spooner helped Sidmouth to the win with a different kind of bird (below)

Tom Reynolds - Flower Power - Winning print - Competition 2

Mike Elliott judged our prints and slides from Competition 2 on Wednesday, and impressed us with his kind and perceptive comments. He was a bit bemused by a flurry of single flower close-ups, but gamely marked them as if there weren't quite so many of them. The winning print, (above, by Tom Reynolds) showed that as well as being a good photographer you need good genes (to produce charming grandchildren). The winning DPI, (below, by Tony Philpott) showed that you don't need to go far to get an excellent picture, this one being taken from a bedroom window at Tony's house

On Wednesday the 21st of September we saw the fruits of the Summer Rally and voted democratically for our favourites. The results were very consistent, with the same photographers being favoured in each of the ten sections in spite of the voting being under conditions of total anonymity. Keith Mashiter was acclaimed the overall winner

The first meeting of the year was well attended, and we were pleased to welcome a number of new members and visitors. David Brock showed us round Bystock Nature Reserve, mostly at ground level, with many stunning close-ups of fungi and tiny wildlife in general. We all vowed to pay more attention to what is just there beneath our feet.
